Glouc only had a 'Together' team because they are, no one really picks their players for Lions or Hundread teams because they are just journeymen, which makes our insipid performance even worse. No one said the name of the club is to blame but it is changing things from whatever means you have to just to try start fresh and it was stupid at the time in most peoples eyes and no one thinks any differently. What annoys me and probably many others is not being able to get big names in from overseas or players who do things in other T20 competitions. Did anyone know who Foulkes, Rae, Garton or any of the other player who comes in, is. If all the management were doing, was trying to build a T20 winning side, surely they can come up with tried and trusted players and look at overseas leagues to see who is making waves consistently. When we bring someone in, it's Moeen Ali who has been doing nothing in T20 leagues all around the world and at international level, made people scratch their heads at his inclusion. Only briefly has he made a difference and even if he goes missing for the Hundread, is he really good value for all other forms. Gleeson, his first-class record is good, has no one ever considered him for a CC game or two.
I have to cringe whilst reading the comments Davies made after the ridiculous and at times, 'Stupid' performance last night. You can go around praising the opposition captain but the actual team selection has to be right. On what basis was Garton picked, he has had more games than wickets in T20 and an economy rate of 9, is not going to make other counties bang at the door and yet WE decided he was good enough and at number 7, he is not worthy of that position, when we won it in 2014, our 6-9 in the order were Woakes, Javid, Ambrose and Patel. Yes we were blessed with such a side but Garton has obviously not recovered from that dreadful game v Worcestershire and here he was at the expense of Barnard and at 6, we had a player who has done nothing all tournament, so I ask anyone, why can't they see what we can see. What is it about getting a left-arm bowler into the side, he should not be picked on variation, but whether or not he is any good. I would sooner have been drubbed by a Somerset or Surrey side who at least have good players but not being able to chase less than 7 an over to beat that lot, very embarrassing. I nearly bought a ticket for the final in between innings, thank God my phone lost charge or I could be in possession of a ticket I really don't want.
It has been 11 years with this silly name and it took bloody ages to get the club to put 'Warwickshire County Cricket Club' on the front of the building after myself and no doubt others kept on at the club to do something as 'Edgbaston' on the front, did not say who played there. Imagine if Manchester United didn't have their name on the front of their stadium and it just said 'Old Trafford', would the fans put up with that, no they would not and now we have our name on the front of our stadium, time to stop this city nonsense and maybe call ourselves Warwickshire Bears for the T20. We appear to be going backwards and good recruitment is massively important, the side from 2008-2017 was built on getting players from other counties who hadn't realised their full potential and became better once we got hold of them, Ambrose, Clarke, Rankin, Chopra, Botha and even Patel was an off-key choice with poor figures until he played more and then became the best county spinner around. What has gone so wrong that we are recruiting very ordinary players.
Agree with Bosworth, get this Birmingham crap out of existence. Other defeats have been poor like last seasons but this is the worst, at least last year, Essex had good players but this lot we lost to tonight, I will instantly forget by next week. When the draw came up a few weeks ago, I thought that this should have been easy and well, IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN, are you reading this Robinson because you should be hearing what we are saying. We see it and and it hurts so why can't he. Rhodes did nothing wrong in T20 and now he will be consigned to a part of our history and Barnard has been treated poorly as has Burgess whilst Benjamin has stayed in the side for no reason other than he can keep wicket but so can Burgess and couldn't have done any worse than Benjamin. If the management piss off anyone else, they might find more people moving on.
What words to use, 'weak', 'Insipid' or just good old 'Useless'. 139 and we couldn't even do that. And yet again (I seem to say this far too often) we lower ourselves to the level of a county with basic club bowlers, medium paced trundlers and spinners who cannot turn it an inch. Do we fit into our pre-season schedule, a few games against this type of side who have bowlers, none of whom would get into our side and yet we make them look like Malcolm Marshall's and Shane Warne's. I cannot remember a weaker chase in a one-day game than this in my 35 years as a member and even before then when all counties picked the same side as the CC. Why did we look so nervous and jittery when chasing such a small total, the bowlers must be thinking that they might as well have conceded 238 after their hard work in getting it back from 51-0(5) and I wouldn't want to be in that dressing room. I think we should have batted first and was surprised as we always look better when we set a score and squeeze a side with spin but that is such a low score that I cannot think we have failed to chase a smaller total since this competition started in 2003.
Thanks 'Inside-edge', I did look back and see his figures, 9.3 isn't brilliant but if you consider the people who go crazy over the overrated Chris Jordan (4-0-57-0 in Surrey's Q-F) who's overall economy is 8.6 during his career, that is only 2.8 runs per over worse in a 4 over spell and I would prefer Miles to Garton just in case he goes to pieces like he did v Worcestershire. Our main problem in quarter-finals has been not making enough runs when batting and if we bat first, we have got to post a good score, yes, it sounds obvious, but we have blown it before and been 20-25 runs short.
Miles seems to be out of favour with so many but he has had some good games. It seems such a long time ago since the group stages finished that I cannot recall his final figures for the group stages overall. Spin seems to have been our strength so that will definitely be what we go with so how about 4 overs each of Ali, Briggs, Lintott, Bethell and Mousely.
I am confidant that we will get the win. I think even just 2 wickets this morning will still see Kent about level and I do not think their tail is that inspiring.
The Finch one looked bad but in real time, what is an umpire supposed to do, it looked like it came off his bat, the fielders all went up in unison and I think most umpires would have given that, no DRS in the CC. The Bell-Drummond one I think was out, I have played it back a few times and as a bowler, you would want that. It pitched in line, it was no way pitching outside leg and not as bad as some I have seen us get at The Oval. We have had some crap luck this season with call-ups from the Hundread and we have more bonus points than anyone which suggests we have not really been outplayed by other sides but as has been said, pitches have not deteriorated that much and so the Essex and Somerset games, we had to have a 4th innings to bowl at if we want to win games and it was just a case of 'Good batting pitch, good batting conditions' and we might have done the same if we had chased.
Are we going to regret not playing a specialist spinner, at this stage of the season, I bet not many teams have done the same as we have.
I think we would all say that he was discarded very quickly from the T20 side a few seasons ago for no particular reason seeing as he can bowl as well but with a lot of our success in T20 in the last 2 seasons being with playing a few spinners, he wasn't really allowed to fit in but if you consider the 'Benjamin-why-not-Burgess' scenario, the management thinking hasn't always been very wise anyway.
For anyone who questioned Rhodes a few weeks ago as if he didn't seem to be doing anything with the bat once he announced he was leaving, well he has shown he still cares - He will be missed a lot.
Well if Kent have a big list of missing players, it's no worse than the list of our players who missed the 50-over cup which was between 8-10 for one reason or another and probably the only way Glamorgan were likely to beat us. We cannot afford to slip up, we don't want to get behind anyone at this stage and have to do a last-day escape like 2022 v Hampshire.
It has not always been the case with the ECB, they do not care one bit and if a fixture list from years ago can see Test players never missing a cup game whilst the CC, B & H, Natwest, Sunday League had to be accommodated, then there is no excuse now. Woakes bowling 8 overs and a bit of batting in finals day (If we get there), is hardly going to wear him out.
That is yet another example of how the ECB do not care at all about county cricket. Years ago, the B & H cup and Gillette/Natwest were prime competitions that all Test players got to play in.
If today told me anything, it is that we need to get a FAST bowler who can put the S** up opposition batsmen. Good as they are, OHD, Rushworth, Barnard would gain more if it was the time of green prepared pitches (Up to late 1990's) where a home side did what they liked. It isn't, and although I am pleased with Rae, will he be here for the long term. I do not have much faith in Briggs as a CC bowler although he is superb in 50 over and T20 and we can't keep using Yates and Bethel just because we have no faith in Briggs. Glad Davies decided to bring pace on or we would be still fetching the ball from Rew's huge hitting.
Unfortunately, I have looked at the forecast on the 'Met Office' site and it looks worse than it did yesterday with 40-60% chance of rain from 11 till 4pm, sorry to bring potentially bad news but I hope it is wrong otherwise it looks like a draw. Not sure if I should go now or not after seeing that.
It appears to be very negative in the last hour apart from Bethel so we won't be setting as big a target as we should. Perhaps the plan is to keep wickets in hand and go mad in the morning for 45 minutes.
I have to agree about the Somerset commentary being very biased, I didn't have it on much whilst at work, only occasionally now and then but every time they were on it was like they were listening to a director who was telling them to be totally one-eyed. I have heard it before and it is tedious at best, bad enough listening to it on Sunday in the Glamorgan game with their commentary.
Cricket will always seem exciting when a game is close but after a few games, anyone new to it will realise there are very few really close games. I once asked someone if they liked cricket, they said "I like, one-day cricket..." and after asking why, she said it was exciting but I pointed out that it can be exciting whilst the team you are following, are winning and when they're batting, if 6's and 4's are flying about then yes it is but overall, the excitement goes downhill once the result is pretty obvious. I think, ultimately, that the Hundread will bring a few new fans to the game but it won't mean many more youngsters are playing it, I think that will happen if it gets back on terrestrial TV and if clubs are funded by money instead of a new format and maybe schools will play it if they are given equipment free.
