Robinson after the game

Please comment on what he said

We were on the wrong end of a big toss - so there you go - rest of the interview was all about making it sound as though it's no big deal.

Interview demonstrates why it's time to go...when he speaks I have zero confidence that he accepts the poor form were displaying or how to turn it around

Worcestershire are safe Exile. They are as it stands 41 points clear of Lancs. Lancs only have another 16 + 24 points to play for.

Worcs will bowl lots of spin at New Road next week to ensure they don't nause up their over rate

No excuses, beaten in 4 and a bit sessions, while amassing less than 200 runs in two innings, is not acceptable.
For Gods sake, will someone on high take a long look at recruitment, retention, coaching, captaincy and management. If there is room for improvement in any of those aspects please, please someone DO SOMETHING, the Membership are at best frustrated, but sometimes you do get the impression that on the field performances are not the "corporate" prime motivating factor.

Can anyone tell me what style of cricket we play in 4 day cricket?
I look at Surrey, Somerset, Essex, even Hampshire and know instantly.
Surrey will batter the opposition their seam attack, no let up, lots of batters who can occupy the crease. Accumulate, keep sides in the field, rest the bowlers and go again.
Somerset, bit more attacking with the bat, make the opposition work for every run with the ball, spinners who can dry up the runs or attack, at least one seamer who can be a point of difference.
They cover all their bases but also, the roles are very clear depending on the conditions and situation.
Are we looking to be aggressive with the bat because we’re suited to it. But our bowling is the complete antithesis. Our bowling thrives in conditions completely unsuited to our batting. We lack a consistent top order player to bat around, on those tracks where our batters thrive, we don’t have the seamer or spinner who can really take advantage.

Just seems so disjointed. And it’s made worse by the fact we make poor decisions in the field repeatedly.

I'm not certain if a change of coach is the answer. Some of the comments on this site imply Mark Robinson is an idiot, which might be true, but as coach he's won three county championships (1 with us), 3 county one day competitions (including a T20) and a world cup. So if he is an idiot he's a remarkably lucky one. That said I can understand that even a generally good coach might come up against a specific set of circumstances where its time to move on. Even with breathless reports from "my brother who drinks in the same pub as Dan Mousley's former hairdresser" it's hard for us supporters to know what's happening behind the scenes..
I'd also echo South Coast Exile's comments on the club being led by corporate rather cricketing considerations. Both the chairman and chief executive come from business/ rugby backgrounds which I don't think is appropriate for a cricket member's organisation.

Having seen Dan Mousley's hair, I wouldn't trust his hairdresser.
I agree with what Reabank says. Robinson is a highly regarded coach with an excellent track record. But, looked at overall, he hasn't really delivered the success that the Club needs and deserves. However, I also agree that there needs to be a full exploration of what has gone wrong and it may not all fall at Robinson's door.

Unfortunately the Members gave their power away when they voted through the rotten constitutional changes.

Previously the WCCC Committee was directly accountable to the Members.

Now the Board isn’t and the Members’ Committee is a pointless sop.

Thats why we’ve ended up with people who think they work for Edgbaston rather than WCCC.

Given Robinson's record could it be his drive and enthusiasm has deminished? Just saying as I have seened that in the past both in business and sport.

Gerry, why do you say this club "deserves" success?

It is not about if Robinson is a good or bad coach, but his methods are no longer effective. That is seen in many walks of life with managers.

What we want is for the club to have good leadership, on and off the field, that performs well and makes sensible signings of players to improve on what we have.
signings like Viari, Ali & Jamaal etc have failed to do that. Also the record on releasing young players, but giving extended contracts to ones who had performed worse than the released players does suggest a number of errors in the clubs internal decision making.

I said that the Club deserves success because it is one of the biggest and (historically) most successful county clubs. I wasn't implying that success will just land in our laps, more that expectations are higher amongst fans and others compared with some of the smaller counties such as Derbyshire or Leicestershire.

I think this sums it up nicely. What may have once worked in one or 2 places, may not now work in a third.
What must be remembered is that Sussex had the makings of a great squad already, and they’d just been left a huge grant by a supporter that essentially made them the richest club in the country at the time.
Similarly with England women, the ECB had pumped a lot of money into women’s cricket at that time, above anybody else but Australia. And again a lot of the core was already in place before he took charge.

Here he inherited a squad that was enjoying their cricket together, all seemingly performing at their peak and got some luck with fitness.
But it needed building upon to account for age, fitness, depth, form. And what’s been obvious is, very few of those players have performed to those levels again consistently. In fact you could argue the more Robinson has interacted the worse some have got.
The reinforcing of that squad has been very poor, for various different reasons.
And it seems there is a lack of accountability within the club currently because we seem to be rewarding failure. That’s at all levels, execs getting increases, longer contracts for underperforming players whilst better players get 1 year deals or leave, coaches who succeed are allowed to leave whilst those who have a history of poor outcomes continue to be allowed to stay in their role.

I was at the ground yesterday. I'd intended to go today until I saw the close of play score on Monday and realised it wasn't going to go to a third day.

The lunchtime tannoy announced that the players would meet the fans 30 minutes after the close of play - writing the match off before it was even finished, though you can hardly blame them. It was also announced Robinson's forum would go ahead Thursday lunch as planned - anyone bother to go?

One thing - on the Worcs thread (I signed up today but generally lurk) there's an idea floating we're safe - anyone looking at the Lancs-Somerset score - are we actually safe? What if Lancs win, we lose to Notts, and the Pears don't put up a fight next week? We're not, in the words of Half Man Half Biscuit, mathematically safe.

I can understand anyone saying that some people there, feel that they are working for 'Edgbaston' and not Warwickshire and one thing that Jeetan Patel often talked about when we had new players, was instilling the history of the club to the point of wanting them to know the history and making them feel that it was important. I get the feeling because most people in the game appear to have written off the 50 over cup, then we only have 2 competitions left so we will put all our eggs in one basket and focus on T20. That didn't work for whatever reason, freezing during the knockout stages, poor team selection and not having a plan B. We are in danger of getting to the point of 2016-17 all over again, so many players getting too samey and not enough new blood coming in and making a claim - Having said that we do have players like Hamza Shaikh and Kai Smith with great futures but in those years mentioned above, we had Bell, Trott, Stone, Woakes, Clarke, Ambrose, Hain, Evans Patel, Wright, Barker, etc and we still went down in 2017 and saved ourselves on the last day, the previous season. Are the management just saying, "So and so is still good we can rely on him..." and is there a case for giving any younger players a chance, biting the bullet and accepting we might have to get relegated to build a slightly new looking side. We did it from 2019, bringing in a few faces and the CC winning side of 2021 looked completely different to the side who won the 2nd division title in 2018. None of us have a magic wand but I would hate us to not progress at all next season and to see us do the same as this season.

Very interesting article in the Cricketer online today written by George Dobell. It confirms that a review of the playing and coaching staff will commence very soon - earlier than the usual end of season review - with Robinson’s position said to be ‘under threat’. Suggests that there are issues between him and some players, as many have alluded to, and goes onto say that Larsen’s position may also be under question, albeit he will be leading the initial review.
Could be an interesting few weeks and months ahead!

The sooner decisive action is taken the better, shame the initial changes aren't taking place this week.

I have no confidence that a side coached by Robinson and with Davies as captain would perform any better at Trent Bridge.

It looks as though Stuart Cain is on the case - he says:
"We have been unlucky with injuries and the weather but, ultimately, others have been through the same, and I can see why some will say these are just excuses," Stuart Cain, the Warwickshire CEO, told The Cricketer. "We need to develop a squad and level of resilience that can manage what the season throws at us. We've not performed to the standards we set ourselves."

I can’t help thinking that with the clubs aim to primarily invest in the stadium/hotels etc, Larsen & Robinson are working under financial restrictions and subsequently red ball cricket comes last in their priorities - hence do little spent on overseas players compared to other counties. Having said that, I’m not sure what Larson had achieved for us so far, especially when his record of signings are concerned. With the loss of Rhodes next year and with Bethell likely to be missing for much of the time, we need someone to get a grip on our squad strength.

Sounds like a load of waffle.

In the bear pit of AGMs in years gone by Cain might have been in some jeopardy as per whatever the Chairman is called!

These days they think they are above it all and not accountable.

They’ve done some good things like the games at Rugby School but I do wonder if we ever recovered from the loss of Farbrace!

Robinson: highly regarded? By who? When? Times change, people change, tactics change, methods change. We have had some fine young cricketers in recent years, fortunately some are still with the club. Young people, (and some not so young) in all types of employment, but especially the sporting world, need to be inspired. Watch any of the Robinson, or Alex Davies, interviews over the last couple of years, have any been inspirational? Would they excite a young cricketer, or as I say, the not so young? Why is Will Rhodes going to play for Durham, why does Sam Hain spend more time at the crease talking to umpires and opposition fielders? Im sure someone will tell me it’s because Will wants to be near his grand parents or that Sam is a naturally friendly chap but we need some sense of urgency, a desire to achieve, sporting hunger. We were beaten before we ever took to the pitch this week v Essex. The second time that we have humiliated ourselves against them in one season.
