To become true contenders in the championship, a massive improvement in the quality of the opening batsmen is needed. It is not fair on the rest of the side that the mediocrity delivered this season is accepted, and even worse rewarded with full county caps.
I mean Rob Yates has a higher season average than Rory Burns, Alastair Cook, Nick Browne and Fletcha Middleton who all play for counties that finished above us. He alone had more centuries than Burns and Sibley combined. He also averaged more than Lammonby, Dickson, Hameed, Slater, Stoneman, Gay, Wells etc all regular openers.
He can do better for sure but he's not a glaring weakness. He's clearly one of the better openers in County cricket.

Talking to management after the game, they felt the umpires just wanted to go home early.
If that's the case a formal complaint should be made by the club
Totally agree.
We're definitely trending in the right direction. No one won more cricket matches than us or Hampshire this season. We won home to Essex and away to Hampshire, we've not done that for a while, we can beat good sides. I honestly don't think we're too far away. I looked at Surrey in 2022 season and thought 'wow what a team...' i didn't really get that vibe from them this year. The knockout defeats are frustrating of course but I think we're really lucky to be following a county that is generally able to compete well across formats with tje prospect of it getting even better. Some of our younger batters have had a great learning season and showed some real promise. Barnard looks an excellent addition despite some of the mental criticism of him not that long ago, Rushworth has done very well too. The recruitment has been good, the academy seems to be working better now, there are some really excellent prospects aged around 16/17 (think the cupboard might be bare with regards the seam bowling prospects though?), Rhodes and Briggs came good at the end of the season (I thought back in spring Briggs was one senior we might have looked to ease out for a younger player), OHD incredible again, for a team in transition this all bodes very well.
We've done a bit better than I thought we might.
How are we not on here?!

Surrey v Hants looks like it's going to end up a nailbiter as well. Which is more than can be said of Essex. If we do win this, and I think that's going to be tough from here, we will be very close to matching Essex and I didn't consider that a possibility until a few hours ago.
Apart from that little mid season wobble after the Blast, we've had a good season.
Has been signed by MI Cape Town to play in the SAt20 this winter. A good opportunity for him and you'd think for the sake of his career one he needs to do quite well in should he get a chance to play.
Davies living a charmed life, a few flashes through the slips/gully and now dropped by Rew.
Our openers have got out to 2 absolute pearlers. That ball Yates got shaped in then seamed away, i mean what can you do. Tough gig this opening lark.
Warner played a genuinely brilliant knock. Such clean hitting.
Hope Gregory doesn't settle, he's give us gip before...
They were very lucky they didn't get in some serious bother over all that. Total shambles.
89 (82) out caught in the final over. I think he's given a very good account of himself after a particularly nervy looking start.
75* (73) needs to cut loose now...
He reacted towards the umpire initially but not excessively in my opinion. He definitely had extended quarrel with Simpson and Murtagh though and seemed quite taken aback by something that got said by one or both of them.
Wouldn't like to see anyone reported for that to be honest was nothing major.
Just on the train back, Lords really is such a brilliant ground and a terrific place to watch cricket. Sat in the Pavilion today, middle balcony near the away changing room.
Great win, big effort from bowlers who stuck at it all day even when it looked as though nothing at all was happening. OHD talismanic and a word for Briggs, he's had a great game. He bowls better in this format when he takes a touch of pace off.
So glad we managed to get the runs after what was potentially the slowest mopping up I've ever seen, so much pissin about.
Yates was only bowling with the old ball before we took the new one. Half a chance here...
I wouldn't even be considering him. This lad averages 10 from 21 FC innings in NZ. One 50+ score.
He's made a ton against the friendliest of friendly bowling today.
The drainage there must be amazing.
He's done well fair play. He was out of favour for quite a bit at one point but he's turned in some decent performances since coming back in lately.
