Now Queens, Taunton, are on half term holiday, Jake is available for us. He's contracted to play until the end of the season - in CC and RLC as well as T20. He makes his season debut for the 2nd's in their two T20 Friendlies against Glamorgan at Newport today (and would have been playing in the scheduled 4 day Championship game there, if it hadn't been called off). I'm really looking forward to seeing how he does in all formats - his Left Arm Wrist Spin (we can't say 'China...' any more !) is fairly unique in the modern game.

Jake has tested positive for COVID - bad news for him and a big loss for the Bears because he has consistently taken wickets. Let's hope he makes a speedy recovery.

A brilliant interview. I had chance to have a chat with him at Portland Road last summer. He's such a nice, level headed guy, but so ambitious and driven. Given all the knockbacks he's had in his County career (Somerset, Hampshire and Gloucester), it's amazing how positive he is. Farbs and Pop have really found a diamond there - and I'm sure he'll repay their faith in him. He's already pulling up daisies for us - as witnessed by how we missed him, up at the Riverside a few days ago. Long may his 'wristies' wreak havoc for us - and not just in white ball games, I hope he gets a chance in the CC in a couple of weeks - he's got the ability and dedication to also do well in the long game.

I see that Jake is a wildcard pick for Southern Brave in The Hundred.

Interesting article about Jake in The Guardian:

Good read that, thanks for linking. He should probably go down the route of being a T20 specialist and try and get into one or two of the franchise leagues this winter. Reading that back I'm probably talking as though it's trivial and easy but as the man himself points out in the article wrist spin has become a desired art form again.

Remarkable story, the odds were so heavily stacked against him. I admit if I was a coach/scout I'd have looked at a left arm wrist spinner in his mid to late 20's and thought 'na' but he's broke that barrier down.

Respect.

The last person I can remember bowling 'Chinamen' as they used to call them, was Paul Adams of South Africa 'Frog In A Blender' as he was known although everybody used to mistakenly call him a leg-spinner. I remember Michael Bevan bowling them for Australia and did see him bowl them v Warwickshire in a 40 over game in 1995.

I remember seeing Paul Adams at Cape Town when South Africa walked all over England back in 1995/6.
I thought of him this week at Cardiff when I saw Kiel van Vollenhoven bowl. He's right arm, of course, but there was a slight hint of the Adams action in his delivery.

The result would suggest that S.A walked over England but it was a very even contest for 80% of the game until the S.A changing room kept feeding out things to the middle that they'd seen on replays and Cronje asked the umpires to keep checking. They did eventually which was not within the rules, no DRS then, the umpires then went to pieces as England got at least 4 shockers which tilted the game. The umpiring was atrocious on that tour, Graham Hick got so used to being given out to leg-side LBW's that on the umpteenth occasion he went back to the pavilion, laughing his head off.

Whilst I think there's a lot of truth in that, you have to give credit to the two Bears (Donald and Pollock) who between them took 14 wickets in the match. And England did lose by 10 wickets.
It was a long way to travel to see England lose all three matches that we saw - the Test plus 50 overs games against Western Province and South Africa.

Didn't Brad Hogg bowl left arm funnies? He also got a significant career boost from limited overs cricket.

Yes, Brad Hogg was the last (and only previous?) Bear to bowl left arm wrist spin.

Forgot about Brad Hogg. He was a big part of the 2004 CC winning side although not taking many wickets and was really miffed not to be retained as overseas player for the 2005 season.
