I saw and took part in a twitter discussion on it and that passage you quote, Gerry, was the crucial one. As interpret it TRJ was still wafting his bat around, overelaborately, when regaining normal position after his shot. So it is still his follow through and therefore he hadn't "completed any action in receiving the delivery". One thing we will probably never know now is if the ball was dead or not at this moment, ie hit the ground beyond the boundary. This is the subject of the next para in the rules, and neither camera has both in shot, understandably. Both umpires were watching the ball in flight. Personally I think moral out from the unnecessary, ostentatious even, bat waving after the shot ;-). But of course I am a Warks supporter.

Back to the match - there has apparently been quite a bit of discussion on at least one umpiring forum about the hit wicket decision against Toby Roland Jones. The consensus seems to be that he was wrongly given out because it is not out if the contact with the stumps occurs, as the Laws says, "after the striker has completed any action in receiving the delivery" . As I understand it, the only exceptions to this are if it happens when the striker is setting off for a run or is seeking to defend his wicket, neither of which seems to have been the case.
The suggestion is that both umpires were (understandably) following the flight of the ball and didn't see what happened and that, had there been DRS available, the decision would have been not out.
What do others (and especially our resident umpire Highveld) think?

One international umpire (who maybe should remain anonymous) said of the hit wicket: " 9 down and a chance to go home early, out.
TV match, not out."

My personal (biased) view is that it was out. If you’ve got long arms and you’re going to swing the bat around after playing a shot then you deserve to be out if you hit the stumps. It didn’t seem like it was that long after he hit the ball, but without knowing how flat it was hit it’s hard to know if it was dead before he hit wicket or not.

I think the exceptionally good international umpire was not being 100% serious.

I feel it was out, but appreciate that alternative views also have merit.

Ethan Bamber. Why can't we bring them through like this? He doesn't do anything special but he does the basics right over and over again, always putting the ball in the right areas. So consistent.

Not that we have the squad depth but some of these players need dropping

I don't know about that. Like who?

Davies for one..Barnard has done little as a batting all rounder. Bethell needs a loan in a Division 2 side

When the going gets tough, we crumble.

I agree, Barnard is lucky to be in the team and has been a disappointment this season. Davies is hit and miss, probably more miss than hit, but can't see any realistic alternative.

What a shambles again today, 43 runs and six wickets lost this morning against a team fighting against relegation. Embarrassing.

Honestly Barnard bowled fantastically v Lancs, best we've seen him. Bethell is only in as a spare batter and was decent v Essex and Kent, not sure he'd have played anyway if Briggs was in.

Yes Davies does look a touch out of form.

Barnard bowled well in very favourable conditions as you would expect.

If he's batting at 6 he's in the side for his batting more than his bowling

Merely stating it would be good tor Bethell to get a good run of games and think that should be elsewhere.

Just like to see more fight.

A lot of the problems this season have been caused by the poor starts from the opening batsmen, with very very few exceptions.
However their mediocraty was rewarded by giving them full county caps when they were not deserved.

Have to agree although youd have to add Rhodes in to. Rhodes dissmisal second innings was awful.

We don’t have many squad options and I’m not sure that many of our first team regulars are that bad. I do think however that we need a far more robust attitude to our four day cricket, our bowlers and more importantly our captain and coach, need to realise that having the opposition 7 down does not mean they are all out! In addition our batters need to spend more time with a batting coach who impresses on them that 20/30 is not enough.

Don’t think that’s fair really, Yates is averaging 40 this season with two centuries. Davies not so good but he’s also had a couple of poor decisions.

Sometimes I think we do so well with the new ball it makes our lower order bowling look poor, I just think we lack a bit of pace and sometimes other teams bat all the way down and have abit of grit

Totally agree about the batting.

I wasn't aware we were having such a poor season.

Not sure we're all saying it's been poor, I think it has been pretty average like last season. Hence looking for ways to improve.

We don't have the squad depth to make changes when required, need healthy competition.

Think part of our issue is the back up players particularly the batting are more white ball oriented than red. That's despite offloading Hose, Lamb and Pollock recently. We don't have that depth as a Championship squad. Again down to the schedule and prioritisation which seems to have shifted across the game to be fair but especially at Edgbaston.

I don't see a need for wholesale changes to the Championship squad but I think post season there will be significant changes and in leadership positions potentially. Won't happen but we could do with being safe with 2-3 games spare and then blood a couple of the youngsters from the 2nds. Promising to see Johal is close again and be nice to see Che Simmons on a flat deck for example but I'm thinking more of the middle order batters George Maddy, Kai Smith or the kids we've got who open Hamza and/or Amir might be worth a go down the order.

It's a huge step up which is why it'd be nice to be safe with a couple of games to go or (not likely to happen I guess) I'd prefer they scrapped relegation went back to 1 County Championship and we could blood these kids now - we ain't winning the title and it would be an opportune time to blood youngsters mid season rather than having to wait until late September exposing to gnarly pitches
