Second XI finally get their season under way on day 2 after the first day of this was also washed out.

Team as follows: A Khan, H Shaikh, CG Benjamin*, EA Brookes, DA Khan, GW Maddy†, DR Briggs, CN Miles, HJH Brookes, CB Simmons, MS Johal, GA Garrett

Somerset 118/5. 3 for H Brookes and 2 for Simmons.

Not sure whether Miles has been injured recently but he's struggled so far. Good to see Briggs bowling though.

(Another) bit of a bowling disaster against Somerset. Following on from the Firsts struggling to get late wickets on Sunday, the Seconds did the same. Somerset were on 118 for 6 (with Henry B and Chas Simmons picking up 5 of them) - but finished on 342, with bowlers Green and Thomas putting on a century for the 7th wicket and Green finishing on 129 NO. Miles was particularly hit - 10.5 overs going for nearly 6 an over (for 1 wicket).

All that, was compounded by an almost disastrous total batting display by the Bears - finishing on 56 for 5 - with only Hamza Shaikh getting any runs (33 NO) - Maddy, (Captain) Benjamin and Daniyal Khan getting quacks.

Thought Henry Brookes looked excellent and threatening in the morning. Had it been a first team game he'd have been kept on longer and they'd never have amassed the total they did. A good workout for all the standby seamers though and nice to see Briggs back too. The second wicket was an absolute screamer of a catch by Hamza Shaikh at third slip low to his right. Benjamin kept wicket with Maddy often at first slip. Guess they'll enforce the follow on tomorrow and try to get off home early

Somerset didn't enforce the follow on -presumably to get some batting practice (and seemingly not bothered to win) - and its paid off this morning - 90 for 1 - with only Henry B getting an early wicket (our old friend, Andy Umeed, who never seems to get runs against us). As posted, he has looked back to his old self in this game.

Heading for some kind of record margin of defeat here. These could be 650/700 ahead by close today and forecast is decent tomorrow. Guessing the two set batters will retire at lunchtime mind

Seems with it being such a wet spring pre-season and early season particularly in the south west Somerset are in no particular hurry to go home. Booked in till tomorrow so piling on the runs this afternoon and a full day to stretch their legs in the field (on presumably a drying playing surface and in more pleasant fielding conditions by then) tomorrow

Just hope Bears put up some sort of resistance

Second innings hasn't started well at 20/3.

This is embarrassing!
Latest is 38-5, which means that so far, Somerset have on average scored 52 runs per wicket lost and Warwickshire have averaged 6.8 runs per wicket lost, playing at home and after winning the toss.

That Chris Benjamin dismissal in the 2nd innings...I don't understand what he's doing there?!

Not excusing the poor performance, but there is a massive difference in the experience of the two sides, with Somerset having several players with ODI experience.
More concerning than the poor batting is the ineffectiveness of the seam bowlers. Based on this performance, some of them are nowhere near the level needed to be a viable first team option.

Presumably referring to Miles, Garrett and Johal?

Miles is a major disappointment in that he had great red ball form two years ago but struggled last year and this game would suggest it could be a similar story this year.

Garrett - unfortunately I don't think I've ever been convinced he has enough.

Johal has had flashes and I'm hoping still can provide more.

Still not sure which way H Brookes is going, there is definitely talent there.

And Simmons has shown promise at least.

I think that's a fair assessment of the back up bowlers.
