In view of impending 'death valley heatwave' conditions I wonder if there are contingencies in place to respond to extreme temperatures next Tuesday when folks are advised not to be outside. From player, staff and spectator duty of care surely there needs to be thought given to altering the hours of play or postponing the start of this next round of fixtures if/and it's a big if the heat is as bad as they fear? With football they could bring kick off times forward to 11am or something is the same possible for cricket? Are we looking at 9.30am starts and a cut of of 2pm and an extra day (Friday) to complete the overs?

Suppose the easiest thing would be put each fixture back to a Wednesday start instead of Tuesday.
Leicestershires game starts Wednesday next week already. Risk then is there'll be interruptions due to the other sort of weather we're more used to here

The ecb sent advice out to umpires and this has also been circulated to clubs, about the conditons this weekend.

Expect additional drinks breaks etc

Is slip-slap-slop going to be sufficient advice for spectators (many of whom will be elderly) and ancillary staff on Tuesday if we get to 40+ I wonder?

Free ice cream for all members would be a nice perk hint hint

Just realised Leicestershire's game starts next Wednesday because they host a womens ODI on Monday. I just wonder if that's the first game that will be affected as temps expected to top 38 degrees on the Monday as there is very little shade at Grace Rd

If spectating, I'd be trying to sit in the shade, dress appropriately and drink lots of fluids, but not alcohol.

I'd also suggest being extra careful about keeping any packed lunches cool would be sensible.

Suffolk county board are advising their clubs to avoid play between 11 and 3 tomorrow and Sunday. Also to prepare shorter boundaries than the norm and also to allow 12 or 13 players so fielders can be rotated more frequently. Some of these may relate more to their under 18's and recreational cricketers

We never had all this fuss during the many (longer) heatwaves experienced over the past 70 years ! We just got on with life and applied common sense taling responsibility for our own actions.

1 we have more knowledge of the harmful effects of excessive heat
2 Society has become more more litigous

This also has the potential to be much hotter than any previous heatwaves, and over a much larger area.

A long but useful article here

Do drink lots of water, 2-3 litres per day at least

Well if you will read the Guardian!!!! We really have become a Nanny State. Who can we sue if we get too hot?? I'm sorry but I do not need to be told to drink more water - it's called applying common sense and taking responsibility for yourself and not waiting to be told what to do. Sorry if I go on a bit but I do wonder how I have survived the past 77 years without all this advice being thrown at me.

It's a great pity you didn't learn any manners and how to be ppolite in your previous 77 years.

The link was provided as it contianed useful information.

Woh Highveld - definitely no intention to be rude - my first sentence was trying to apply a touch of humour - I just get a bit uptight being told how to live my life. It just seems as though we are having our hands held being given instructions and guidance in everything we do. It never used to be like that. You mentioned society is more litigous (I agree) just that I can't see how that applies to this heatwave.__

Main thing, though, we may disagree but we must never fall out especially when we really are on the same side supporting The Bears.

Thanks for that, The link was honestly intended to be helpful.

The last thing anyone want's is to be waiting hours for an ambulance or in A&E with heat stroke, especially as we can take steps to avoid it.

Have a great weekend, and stay safe.

I can't remember the last time I read a paper newspaper, but I read the online versions of several. Always best to gather information from a number of sources.

One problem I guess is the vagaries of the English weather and how sure they can be that Tuesday will be as bad as predicted. Would players object to moving to Wednesday start and thus only having Sunday off before the next game?

I also wonder if Gary Barwell has been asked to prepare a very short boundary wicket on the Raglan Stand side so as to lose some of the suns intensity behind the west stand after about 5.30pm and bring the ropes right in so the fielders have less work to do. Would this counter any home advantage we might have over Kent?

Also team selection. Surely wise to pick 9 all rounders for this match - I'd certainly be looking to bring Jacob Bethell & Ethan Brookes in

Will never happen but I’d get Yates in for Davies, for his bowling. Hain back for Benjamin. Keep Mousley again for his bowling and being in either Bethell or Ethan Brookes for Lamb.
Then tell Danny Briggs to get his act together, and take advantage of a dry pitch.
If possible Norwell back too for Garrett.

Get plenty of bowling in and try bat first and keep them out in the heat all day.

With an average of under 13, under 9 excluding his one good innings, and a poor second team game, Yates should not be anywhere near the first team at the moment.

There are comments here about players been selected regardless of their poor form, Yates is a prime example of that this season.

Normally I’d completely agree. But I think there’s 3 things to consider here that are abnormal.
1- Sibley is off, why not let Yates go back to opening where he is a long term option. If we accept we’re not winning the league this year, I don’t think we’re in relegation trouble. I’d plan ahead.
2- As a very young man, he (in my opinion) is currently the only person this year who’s been dropped for poor form. So if you’re him, it must be crushing to see so many others being given backing, and him being dropped.
I appreciate he had his chance to show form, but that argument works for everyone else too. And I think he’s almost a sacrificial lamb at this stage, a token gesture of a player dropped for form, as it’s easier to drop Yates, then it would be Davies, McAndrew or Lamb. I also feel that he should have more credit in the bank than someone like Bethell based on proven performances last year, rather than Bethells on pure potential.
3 - He bowls, and did well last year and took some decent wickets. And in a game where it’s going to be 35 degrees and feel like 40, another bowling option would be helpful.

Lamb has scored almost 500 runs including two hundreds, are you seriously suggesting he is dropped?

McAndrew has scored more runs than Vihari who was a specialist batsman, did in more games last season, as well as taking 16 wickets in the 7 innings he's bowled in.

If a young batsman should be added to the side it should be Ethan Brookes, who is consitantly scoring runs in the second team, and taking wickets.

Also, Bethell has a good claim to be included, especially with 11 wickets in the game at Tonbridge.

As I said before an average of below 13, from a specialist batsman after 7 games does not deserve to be near the first team, unless you're happy to accept mediocrity.

Lamb had a great start to the season, no doubt, I think he’s a good player and hope the club come to their senses and he stays.
But in the last 3 matches he’s batted 5 times and has a high score of 37, averaging just under 13. So he’s clearly out of form. So of the batsmen, he or Benjamin would be the ones on the hot seat. (Rhodes won’t be considered for the obvious reason). But Benjamin has had only a couple of chances, so you’d think Lamb more likely to make way for Hain.

Comparing any overseas to Vihari is like saying Messi is amazing because he’s better than a conference South player. Compare McAndrew to like for like, players like Siddle, Harmer, Abbott or Abbas, and he comes up a long way short. Whilst he won’t be dropped, he’s not exactly setting the world on fire either.

I think there comes a point where second XI cricket can only tell you so much. I suspect both Bethell and Brookes are at the awkward stage where they are probably better than a lot of the younger players they’ll face there, but aren’t quite there in terms of beating out the players above them for a first XI spot.

It’s about balancing the immediate needs against those of of the future. For me, I think we all know come next year Yates is opening when Sibley goes. So whilst his performances haven’t demanded selection, long term there’s probably more benefit in trying to get him back in form. For Brookes his time will come in the 50 over comp, and for Bethell it’s about taking his chance when it comes next time. He had half the T20’s and the Northants game and didn’t produce enough to keep his place.
It’s difficult, but Yates produced in some big moments last year. And for me, I think that should have earned him a bit of loyalty in terms of where he is in the selection pecking order. Hopefully getting dropped will have given him the kick he needs. But Robinson will make the final call.

Ultimately, Davies hasn't performed and is should probably have been omitted before now.
However his poor performances have been accepted, and that caused issues elsewhere in the team.
If he'd been available, Marcos Jamson of South Africa would have been a good signing, and would have contributed in all parts of the game.
