Wow, that's a big leap into the dark, isn't it? No track record, experience or knowledge of cricket (it seems). Gymnastics, Boxing, Judo, Athletics, Rugby, Football, yes, but ..... I thought we were a cricket club !
I know people jabber on about 'transferable skills' a lot these days, but surely experience of the actual game you're playing, should be the main aim in professional sport. It's all bl**dy Dan Ashworth's fault!

You forgot his experience with Badminton GB, LB - that's close to (one part of) cricket, it involves skill in using of a piece of equipment by the hand! So, he's obviously totally suited to sorting out our batting needs! Bowling and fielding requirements are picked up by his knowledge of boxing and gymnastics. And being good at running is covered by his experience in athletics, Rugby and football. He's the total package - what more do we want!!

I guess on his first day, the coaches will be there to tell him: “No, you hold the bat by this end.”

Oh, I forgot, his Judo experience will be good for players learning how to deal with recalcitrant Australian opponents or pitch invaders!

I think we've all given full vent to our sarcasm about his lack of cricketing experience! Maybe alongside that, we should wish him well.

Sorry, Gerry, I got carried away! I do wish him well. I AM sure his experience will help.

James Thomas has an excellent record in developing, and delivering, high level sports performance programs. He also played sport at a professional level, so will have an uderstanding of what the atheletes require.
Hopefully he will ensure that there are improvements on the analysis of potential signings, especially overseas players. We have had too many signed who were either unfit, not good enough or just using the club as a paid holiday. Many sports have shown that a datas driven approach is the way forward.
Who had heard of him before this announcement?
George Dobell says:
"The appointment might be considered something of a risk, ... Thomas' relative inexperience in cricket will leave him with a steep learning curve in the coming months. Warwickshire hope the experience of those around him, not least the interim head coach, Ian Westwood, and the new director of cricket operations, Tony Frost, will ensure this isn't too much of a disadvantage."
I think it shows they are thinking seriously about what skills they need and maybe there is an opportunity to be the best county at using data and the best at preventing injuries. I wish him all the best.
Looking at the structure as a whole it seems to me light on cricket experience. There's no - one on the board with top level playing experience, chairman and CEO are from rugby backgrounds and the top cricket bloke (whatever they want to call him) has never worked in cricket. That leaves Westwood as the most senior cricket person but he's just stepping up to a new role. I would have thought Matt Walker would have been a better fit at either head coach or top cricket person with Westwood and / or Thomas reporting to him.

Apparently, Westy has only got the Head Coach job on a short term contract. I wouldn't be surprised if Matt Walker moves up (especially with all his experience), assuming he does a decent job with the batting and IW isn't fitting the bill.
Whatever happens, Thomas will need all the help he can get from Westwood, Walker, Barnes, Kerrigan & Frost (and Maiden) to get up to speed on cricketing knowledge.
