It’s hardly a rumour at this stage, it’s pretty much the worst kept secret in cricket. But Leicestershire were throwing money at keepers this year. Apparently £100k a year on 3 year deals they offered Burgess, Jordan Cox, and Bracey. All 3 turned them down to stay where they were or move elsewhere. And they eventually settled for Ben Cox.
So it’s interesting he turned down a 3 year deal there, to sign one for the Bears. Fingers crossed this is more of a we’ll kick it down the road and sort something longer next year.

If I remember correctly some of our other players have also signed one year extensions this season? Can’t remember who though

Can't recall any 1 year extensions this year but to echo what has been said previously we have indeed got quite a few senior players out of contract end of 2024.

And we're never very good with contracts, every 2 or 3 seasons we seem to have good players going into the remaining 12 months of their deal whilst we give out long term security to fringe players. Craig Miles signed a 3 year deal back in October, nice lad and all, willing trier, but he did well to get that.

Just checked my emails - Rhodes signed a new contract in January this year to take him until the end of 2024, so I assume this was a one year extension.

An excellent day for the all rounder today. A tidy spell of seam up and then an excellent steering of a chase all while giving his gloves a day off

Good news.

This is very good. Keeping hold of key performers like Burgess and OHD is crucial.
Didn’t they only extend him less than 6 months ago anyway? Seems odd.

Seems he has decided to retire, to persue a new career.

His decision leaves us without a quality keeper on the staff, with the inexperienced Kai Smith the likely first choice.

Best wishes to him. I’m gutted though - he is a top keeper. I hope that Larsen is actively trying to recruit. This wouldn’t have been an over night decision by Burgess. With Rhodes also gone and an aging bowling line up (and without a specialist red ball spinner) we could be suffering a hard summer.

Yes, it is bad news for us, but as many have said, he won't have made the decision lightly.
Once again, it is important to note - not a word from a certain Head Coach!

I think that’s going to be a huge loss. A very popular member of the team and one of the most reliable players too.

Got to hand it to him, it’s brave to take a step into the unknown like that. Reminds me a bit of Fabian Cowdrey a few years ago, an excellent county pro, retiring young and deciding he wanted to work outside the game.

It's a big loss to Warwickshire and to the game of cricket more generally - he has been an exceptional talent.

The one player we didn't want to lose as he's gonna be so hard to replace. Outstanding, underrated gloveman who always made tough runs. We always had half a chance with him in the side.

Terrible, terrible news.

Every year we seem to lose somebody significant/important whether that be a player(s) or coach. Been happening for ages now. Just no continuity.

Ouch! That is desperately bad news for the Club. He has been an absolute rock for the County Championship side and there is nobody on the horizon that could replace him.
There's no denying that he has earned the right to make his own decisions and it is always impressive when somebody chooses to go out at the top. Best wishes Michael.

That's a massive blow. He's saved/won aot of games in his time here

All we can do now is thank him for his service.

Hopefully the rumour that OH-D is resigning to become Archbishop of Canterbury is not true, or we are in deep trouble.

This is a huge blow, especially being so sudden. That batting line up is looking wafer thin, at the moment its Hamza in for Rhodes and Kai in for Burgess, which on the one hand is exciting, but I think will leave us vulnerable. The need to recruit of an experienced top order bat is now desperate.

Don't worry - that job's going to Lineker - he is always preaching about something!
