Just using the data that is available.

Hopefully the club makes use of the skills of their analyst to dive even deeper into the data on this seasons performances to exactly pinpoint the reasons for the failures this season.

Many times the initial observations, and top level data, do not provide the actual reasons.

Fortunately having an alternative opinion is not a crime, or wrong. Although some here seem to disagree!

Well we survived - although wouldn't have if it had been three points for a win one for a draw. Will Rhodes has been great for us and his losing batting and attitude weakens the squad. I was pleased with Helm coming in but his career record is very similar to Craig Miles and he's not had a good year. I'd say we need to bring in a spinner and a fast bowler and ideally would add a second fast bowler and maybe some batting depth. I totally understand the club wanting to review the set up - you can't just say "better luck next time" after a season like this but it (presumably) takes away time to address the weaknesses in the squad.

We've signed Tom Helm?

The stats seem to indicate that we have one of the better opening partnerships, no?

Assume he meant Bamber.

Yes my mistake Ethan Bamber. I really thought we had signed Helm, but Bamber looks a better bet! On stats anyway.

The stats from Copilot, before the current game, which will have reduced the average score for the first two wickets has us placed 5th or 9 div one clubs.
The fact that both, regular, openers are getting out for an individual score under 20, almost 50% of the time suggests they are not one of the "better opening partnerships"/

Ultimately it is down to how the data is interpreted, and that Robinson not only accepts mediocrity, but rewards it by giving extended and improved contracts.

The almost inevitable draw here coupled with Lancs forcing a win at New Road would haul is up to an almost respectable 6th.

A couple of youngsters now blooded it represents something to build on I would suggest we need a good overseas batter and bowler (barring a full season of Woakes) if we want to challenge at the top end as opposed to the bit part overseas we seem to get these days.

Given Lancashire have been relegated 4 times now since they fluked the title in 2011, Warwickshire only being relegated once in that time isn't so bad

Our average opening partnership is one of the lowest in Division one, so improvement is needed.

It must be soul destroying for the middle order knowing they are going to be batting in the first few overs, almost, every innings.

I didn't think I could let this statement pass without a bit of evidence-checking, and the results are quite interesting...

Here are the actual average opening partnerships, in order, for all teams in Division 1:

Surrey: 53.7
Warwickshire: 46.7
Nottinghamshire: 40.3
Durham: 33.0
Essex: 28.7
Kent: 28.3
Worcestershire: 22.9
Lancashire: 19.2
Somerset: 19.0
Hampshire: 15.9

So, it turns out that we actually have the second best opening partnership in Division 1!

2nd best opening partnership in Div 1 as far as I can going off these stats.

I think I am disappointed more in the CC with our lack of penetration once 5-6 wickets go down (263-6 in the current game) and certain batting collapses have been poor. But, bonus points can be misleading as you get the same for bowling a side out in 110 overs for 200 as you would bowling a side out for 400 in 110 overs so perhaps there is a lopsided nature when you look at the table of bonus points. Apart form Essex at home and Surrey away, we haven't been really dominated by many counties so I am optimistic about the future if we can get some good new players into the side including a good overseas player. The one-day form isn't that much of a worry apart from knock-out games. 16 wins to 9 defeats isn't a stunning return but we do appear to qualify early in the limited overs format and losing players maybe7,8,9 of them does not help which might explain Glouc/Glam winning trophies with hardly any of their players missing. I think we will continue to be competitive in one-day cups and hopefully can get through the knock-out stages so I am more upbeat there but we have been a side who usually play good CC crickets and as long as we get good recruits, I am not as pessimistic as I could be if I look at the overall picture. The thing that does worry me is Robinson, his strange team selection and the fact that he hasn't always faced-up to things. If he goes, I will feel more optimistic about next season. I doubt many on here want him to stay.

Exiled Bear has not provided the source for his figures, which reduces their value. The figures I have quoted are from cricinfo, for the inning by innings analysis, and from Microsofts Copilot AI search engibe for the figures for all 9 counties, which are taken from cricinfo.

The fact that can not be avoided is that the two main openers both get dismissed for less than 20 almost 50% of the time.

Great to see Sam Hain complete his 100, and having a good partnership with Ed Barnard.

Well done Mr Hain, very pleased for him, a typical innings from him. Very pleased he signed my picture of us both with the CC trophy in 2021, at the beginning of the season. It will go on my soon to be inherited piece of furniture in my dining room in a frame.

I got the stats by going through every scorecard for each team this season and extracting their opening partnerships and calculating the averages.

I don’t know where Microsoft Copilot is getting its data from because it’s quite different to the actual, correct, data if you look through the scorecards. Generative AI models are known to make things up so maybe that’s what’s happening here.

As Andy said, the commitment to this narrative is quite impressive, particularly when the evidence shows that the opposite is actually true.

And another season comes to an end. Probably the most disappointing for some time for various reasons.

I can’t imagine it’ll be a particularly pleasant end of season review, and it’s clear significant changes are needed to bring back the feel good factor, let alone a trophy.

We will just have to agree to disagree.

i know the figures I published this morning for the Warwickshore players is correct, and the regular openers get out with individual scores below 20 almost 50% of the time is not a sign of the player been a good opener or it having a good opening partnership.

As much as some here seem to dislike it, we are allowed to have different opinions, and having a minority viewpoint is not wrong.

Fortunately the club had a middle order of Hain, Rhodes and Barnard to put a recovery in place in most innings.

On the opening stands.
I’ve just gone back through the scores:

0,1,6,5,26,62,5,52,106,19,29,48,15,38,3,21,18, 59,10,56,116,343,37.

That’s an average of just over 46.
Take out the ridiculous situation of the 343 stand with the kookaburra in those silly early season games, that average goes to 33.
2 (+1) hundred stands, 4 fifty stands, 6 single figure stands. 3 of those big stands are with those kookaburra early season matches. With a dukes the average is far lower.
The issue in my mind is the lack of consistency, both players run very hot and cold, having looked through the numbers too often they’re out very close together so those scores are often as much for 2 as they are for 1. So it’s always worse than just 1 wicket, and we’re often left with 2 brand new batsman facing a relatively new ball and fresh bowlers.

Kookaburra, Dukes, favouritism, Robbo, AI etc, it's been the second best opening partnership in the division despite Yates falling off dramatically in September. End of.

Besides we've struggled this season because we've bowled absolute dross the majority of the time because we have an ageing, injury prone seam attack nothing coming through the academy to back them up. Huge issue going forwards and won't get sorted quickly, patience (something supporters don't seem to have) will be required.

We've batted decently well with room to improve even more, generally speaking.

It’s context. It’s valuable as to how you make decisions and analyse things.
Dismissing says far more about the person than the information.

Hopefully the club analyses the method and context of every dismissal as that will give an insight to the context and cause of each dismissal. ie someone getting a low score because they are trying to accelerate the score to get bonus points is very different to someone leaving a straight ball, or playing a stupid shot when the situation requires occupying the crease.

Basically it needs to make use of the data available to analyse where the areas of weakness and strengths are. Commonly known as the "Moneyball" approach!

That last post is important. One should look at the dismissal in the context of the game. However, memory does say that on a number of occasions the poor opening came when what was needed was a stay at the crease to wear down the bowlers rather than trying to score runs - we had a few shocking low scores this season.
