I saw a list of players across the country whose contracts were up at the end of the year, I've tried to attach a link to the website (a Derbyshire blog which actually is a very interesting read) but it may not work. Amongst the fact that Surry seem to have an entire first team nearing the end of their contracts I could see that ours included messers Burgess, Hannon-Dalby and Briggs. Whilst Briggs has found it tough the past couple of years with injuries I would be most disappointed if Burgess and OHD were allowed to leave.

Quite a few interesting names available though if we were going to be looking at strengthening from outside of the academy.

I think OHD stays. Burgess may well be weighing up his options, rumours of him leaving have been swirling for about 12 months now.

We may well move on from Briggs.

I think Garrett and Johal are struggling. Only 1 may stay. Likely both will be released.

Hamza Sheikh and Amir Khan will both get extensions I'd have thought.

Don't know about Ethan Brookes.

Its never a nice time. All good cricketers, all good people.

One is for sure, Warwickshire are never very good at this contract lark.

I think that Clubs do sometimes struggle to handle these matters as sensitively as they should. The arrival of agents on the scene has probably made a difference.
Matters have certainly advanced since the sixties - I read recently that letters for all the players would be pinned to a notice board and players wouldn't know until they opened their letter whether it was a new contract or a termination letter.

We could do with strengthening the pace attack so I'd be interested in John Turner of Hampshire and Gus Atkinson of Surrey.
If Briggs is released a new front line spinner should be a priority. Perhaps Bess if he is available.

Excellent news. Really rate him. Ithink we could be in for this Cox who's left Worcestershire today aswell?

Gone to emerging side Leicestershire

Cox is a good get for Leicestershire. I wouldn't have had him over Burgess though and we have decent keepers coming through the academy.

Thought i'd be enviromentally friendly and recycle this thread from last year.

It looks like Amir Khan, who is currently playing with the SACA rather than our 2nd team will not be offered a new contract. He's the only member of the staff not to be included in the first team squad at any stage this season.

I'm not syre who else is out of contract, but hard decisions need to be made about many of the squad.

Just seen this online.

Not sure how accurate, but looks about right to me.
We have a lot of players off contract next year. From May I believe they can start talking to other counties.
Have to re-sign, Bethell, Barnard, Burgess, Hain, OHD, Shaikh and Smith. Potentially Lintott too for white ball.
Probably time to move on from Rushworth, Briggs, and Miles.
Moeen a certainty if he’ll play red ball, as he’s internationally retired now. He’d be a huge boost. But 50/50 if he only plays T20.

I assume that the list is about right. So a lot of negotiating for the new coach (whoops, I mean Mr Robinson) to do.

move Briggs on after his best ever T20 season for number of wickets taken, where he was like 2nd in the competition? i think that unlikely, as much as his red ball game is poor (that isn't the management team's priority, clearly)

i wouldn't get rid of the all time leading domestic T20 wicket taker when seemingly at the top of his game, myself

There may be a bit of a Will Rhodes type dilemma in relation to Danny Briggs because my recollection is that he came to Warwickshire specifically because he wanted to play more red ball cricket. But the reality is that he hasn't delivered in red ball. So if part of his negotiation on a new contract is that he still wants a guarantee of red ball selection, that might be a problem.
I would imagine that counties generally will be looking at the spreadsheet and seeing who might be available soon.

Don’t disagree on Briggs being superb for T20. But by the 2026 season he’ll be 35. More and more we only play him in T20. That experience and achievement comes with a price tag. As I understand his family situation he doesn’t really want to travel much for franchise cricket. So would be against a T20 only deal, wants all formats.
Can you justify paying someone that much, when you could get an all format decent red ball spinner, plus have Bethell, Yates and Mousley for T20 spinners too. And we could have Moeen and Lintott as well still.
It’s a balance.

George Thomas of Somerset seems to be the best of the players marked as released. He's a good young all rounder, that might be worth a look at.

As he didn't play in the last few 2nd xi games, failed when he played with the U18's, and was in the llast few SACA games, I expect that Amir Khan has been released.
He was the only full time contracted player to never appear in a first team squad all year.

wow, I didn't recall that.

on a related note, before Briggs came here I always compared his T20 figures to Jeetan's and assumed that, as his strike rate was much better than Jeets, he was a more attacking, toss it up, bigger spinner of the ball, who would if anything be better as a wicket-taking CC bowler. I literally never noted his CC averages.

Strange how someone so much better than Jeets at taking T20 wickets would be so much worse at taking CC wickets. I used to think it must be because he turned it more, but having seen him, i think he actually turns it less and gives it much less of a rip than Jeets; it seems to me it's just that, in the white ball game, Jeets absolutely hated getting hit for boundaries and bowled more defensively, where Briggs almost seems to relish batsmen having a go at him, if they hit a six 'please, try that again' and then the subtle variety in the next delivery = wicket.

I absolutely love watching Briggs at work but its a major liability that our premier spinner is so mediocre with the red ball

absolutely we aren't at all short of spin options
