Flippin' 'eck eh! Good entertainment, thank you to whomever came up with the idea of 'Live Streaming'. A terrific win, who knows if that will be significant in both qualifying and getting an automatic semi-final place.

A fantastic game of cricket. Always good to win a tight one. That cover drive for four from Lintott with six needed was beautiful.
Kai Smith looks the part. He must have overtaken Benjamin as second choice keeper now.
Lots of positives from today.

Excellent work by Rhodes and Smith to break the back of that.

That we struggled doesn’t surprise me. We were due one like that. We in theory have 5 senior batters, but you can’t expect Barnard and Burgess to score runs every time.
So who is there who should be able to be relied upon, well you’ve got Rhodes who did the job today.
But then Benjamin is so out of form, he can’t be relied upon and I’d rather have Theo Wylie.
But also, when was the last time Yates scored any proper runs? Seems to have been out of form for a while now.

Shouldn’t be relying on the likes of Shaikh and Smith. They shouldn’t have that pressure on them.

Well Yates is averaging 30 for his last five completed innings - not great, but not all that bad.

Given our problems with knockout games it was good to guts out a tight one. To reply to an earlier post, the last time we won by one wicket was the same game last year. Interesting to see run rate go down in the game, of course we take the win. Also good that there were solid contributions from all the young lads (with Hamza from the last game). Hopefully Simmons and Wylie get a chance soon as well.

Yeah I don't feel like Yates is out of form, he's had illness/injury which has meant he's missed games and disrupted his momentum but he's not out of form.

I'm glad today happened, we needed a scrap and the opportunity to dig deep. I thought we were done for when Booth got out. Nice little innings by Kai Smith, appreciated the positivity and the way he targeted the office. His dismissal was poor though, that ball should have disappeared. Looks a good white ball player. We should be looking to move the likes of Benjamin on to bring lads like Smith and Wylie through, they have more upside.

I always enjoy Hove. It's majestic in the sun.

I think the one day team have done superbly, 3 wins in 5 days and all away from home - thats just brilliant.

Also great to see youngsters Shaikh, Smith & Ali get game time and for the next match Benjamin should be left out with Smith taking the gloves and Wylie bought in. Benjamin has played 14 T20 games & 3 one day games and i believe his highest score is 21 - enough is enough.

These are the recent performances of one of the side, I fail to see how that gives an average of 30, or shows that the player is in form.

However, is that comment really appropriate for a public forum?

Yes, I agree that it's not quite up to our usual high standards as a comment but, even with my super-human powers as a moderator, I'll let it go on this occasion.
As for the average of 30, I was looking at the last five innings before the Sussex game - 42, 0, 35 not out, 15 and 57, so 149 runs in four completed innings. So even if you add in his 2 v Sussex, he still averages fractionally over 30. And then there's his bowling and his catching.

For me, and my point was more about reliability and consistency, Yates is very feast or famine. You’re never quite sure what you’re going to get. Which is the reliability bit, when he comes off he’s superb, but there’s often little rhyme or reason to when he’ll come off.
Perhaps form was the wrong word to use, because actually the way he scores his runs, and this might be to do with opening, in the past he has tended to get a huge score, then not much else for a while.
He doesn’t often get those battling 20’s and 30’s in red ball.
Similarly in white ball, often it’s single figures or 40+, there’s little in between.

In his last 10 matches, he’s had 11 innings. Out 10 times. Exactly 230 runs scored, averaging 23. So whilst a lot of those are t20, it does support the point that it’s feast or famine as he’s had 4 innings where he’s achieved a notable score for that format, but in the other 7 it’s 3 ducks, 2, 4, 7 and 15.

And perhaps the broken nature of his appearances is why this year it seems worse, because there are bigger gaps caused by injury and illness.

But I thought I would give an explanation of where I was coming from in terms of viewing Yates’ reliability, and how perhaps the 5 senior batters in the ODC aren’t as reliable or consistent a line up as perhaps one might think.

Yes, I agree that he isn't a model of consistency and is maybe a bit more so than most players.

Just had a look at the Surrey team that played today.
A very out of balance team.
Strong batting, full of names, 3 England capped players in Sibley, Burns and Foakes, plus first team regulars Steel and Patel. Not all renowned at white ball, but players you’d expect to be more than good enough for the mixed bowling you can get in this competition.
But their bowling is almost entirely kids and part timers.
I wonder if they’ll be allowed any players back for Friday.
