They've declared, we need 498 to win. Davies & Rhodes had a partnership of 200+ earlier on in the season against Durham, something akin to that is needed now!

I think we are the only side in Division One who has failed to take 20 wickets in a match so far this season.

Very good first ball from Kyle Abbott, but it was a very poor shot. Abbott is too good a bowler to play without moving your feet!

Some of the variable bounce Bethell and Briggs were starting to get, plus some grip, I could see Dawson doing a number on us again.

Strange to bat for so long when we are always going to have to score at 4 per over once they had a lead of about 440. Hampshire can set attacking fields all day anyway so why go on to almost a 500 lead. Now way that I think we can win even thought the pitch is doing nothing but fewer overs to bat will suit us. We did rather wilt in the sun but I thought our attitude in the field was good with some good stops and chasing.

We seem to struggle to go put back to back performances in the championship together. We definitely haven't had four good days (rare I know), I can't recall three good days (still rare) but I also can't remember two good days in a row! That's what's killing us and generally separates the good sides from the bad, which worries me.

Only saving grace in this game is Hampshire may have declared too late.

I thought Davies looked out of his depth tactically.
As Gerry writes, within the first hour I think it was, Organ edged one through second slip and there wasn’t one. They were about 100-2, in the morning session and you’re already defending. At that stage the match was by no means a forgone conclusion of them declaring. But we had fields that suggested otherwise.

Mousley held out the attack far too long. Miles used as a bouncer machine multiple times, a plan that only had 1 moment of potential which was when he hit Dawson in the helmet. No attempt to use the spinners in an attacking sense at all. More to take up overs, or limit the boundary count. Again this was being done very early on. Briggs was running in knowing he was almost guaranteed to give up a single every ball no matter what he did.
Can’t fault the effort, they kept running in, kept chasing in the field, but tactically looked devoid of ideas and the limited threat of the bowlers made that all the more obvious.

We should be doing better than this with the players that we have. We cant bowl teams out twice and we cant build innings totals because key batsmen keep getting out cheaply.........despite the fact that we have a deep looking batting line up.

A few of us said last season that there is something wrong and that Robinson should have been dispensed with along with the other coaches. Our bowling attack is toothless once the new ball has lost its shine. Miles is not good enough, Norwell not fit enough.

How is it that teams like Hampshire & Essex keep rolling out their bowlers season after season and get performances from them whilst ours break down and underperform?

We need a new leader with fresh impetus who demands and gets better performances from the players, we also need to review our player recruitment which is just not good enough. Better standards need setting all round.

OK, we'll get rid of the batters, bowlers and coaching staff. Can the stewards stay or do they need to go too? And I've just had a word with the cleaning lady who's a bit worried about losing her job in the big clear out.

That is not what I am saying............we have good players but we are just not getting performances out of them in red ball cricket and this has been ongoing for 2 and a half seasons now. That is down to leadership, if the basic talent is there but the performances aren't then you have to conclude that the coaching and decision making is below par, recruitment as well.

Obviously you think that things are ok then and we have just been unlucky?

Little bit rude that. The poster was just giving an observation.

In my opinion, the problem is that we have a team set up to compete in T20 cricket, but is not good enough to compete at the top end of the Championship. Too many of our bowlers are either over 30 or suffer from injuries during the season. It's ok for some of them to bowl 4 overs a match in T20 but how many of them can manage 20 overs+ in a Championship game? Also, i do not feel that the Captain is pro-active enough in Championship cricket, i appreciate that it's his first season in charge but we need more innovation from him during matches.

There should be a full review at the end of the season, with key points been

a) Leadership, on and off the field
b) Overseas signing policy This year we have two players who seem to be here on holiday, they are not providing what they were contracted to provide. Is the club looking at all the possible players, or just those from one agent?
c) Team selection. Why are some players allowed to repeatedly under perform with no consequences. There seems to be an acceptance of mediocrity from some players.
d) With the number of bowlers out for long periods, are we providing the best support from the S&C and Sports Medicine departments to ensure the players are available as much as possible.
